This month marks 110 years since the official opening of the Wilhelm et cetera where the Fisher Trops synthesis / process was developed and patented.

This method for synthesising Liquid hydrocarbons From carbon monoxide and hydrogen gas Has served whenever an alternative to oil has been necessary/wanted/desired/needed.

Developed in Germany at a time when self sufficiency in raw materials was a necessity, and commercially important in South Africa when trade sanctions required it. Forced, compelled, demanded. Both countries were coal rich and oil poor but needed fuel for energy and transport.

A need for Energy and transport continues/ transpires/ prevails remains today. And the climate crisis obliges us to consider synthetic feels as an alternative to oil again further more more over even more. With greater emphasis.

Today, alternative carbon feed stocks, are proven. Used cooking oils and animal fats are converted into hydrocarbon for synthetic fuels including sustainable aviation field (SAF). But this as a feed stock in limited supply and will not serve tomorrow’s purpose. Nor is the original feed stock of liquefied coal an option. 

SAF synthesised from used cooking oils and animal facts via heifer Account for 0.53% of aviation fuel. This is X tons.

This named regulation Will require an increase to 2% by 5% by et cetera

There is simply not enough used cooking oil and animal fat to meet this demand.

Moreover, a sub mandate requirement of 0.7% synthetic aviation fuel as a portion of the SAF is required by 2025 check this year. This will increase to 35% check percentage by 2050 check percentage.

The full mandate can be accessed here . Appropriate feedstocks are listed in annex nine. It is important to note that the mandate makes clear that this list of feed stocks is not static. It is not fixed. Both feed stock availability, Stock identification will change and technology will develop and emerge. While decarbonisation of the aviation industry is imperative, Sustainable aviation fuel is key to that decarbonisation, It must be allowed To Flex with changes in business, social, political, and economic environments. Conflict, food demand, weather and cost can all impact suitability of any given feed stock for processing.

Hefa uco limited feedstock

BTL  sewage sludge, grass, camelina , soil regeneration, poor soil, miscanthus, no completion with food.

PtL  accreditation. Water. No water shortage. But there are water stressed areas and one in three people live without adequate clean drinking water. But saf demand increases from x tonnes to x tonnes. Leading to water requirement increases. Navy research into using sea water, which may mean less pressure on fresh water for the process. Excellent of sea water for so much hydrogen and X amount of freshwater for so much hydrogen.
