Second hand september

Second Hand September was launched by Oxfam in 2019 as part of its ongoing effort to promote sustainable fashion and reduce the environmental impact of clothing production. Since its inception, the campaign has grown into a global movement, with thousands of participants joining each year to challenge the norms of fast fashion. The campaign aims to shift consumer behavior towards more mindful shopping practices and to support second-hand markets as a key part of the solution to the fashion industry’s waste problem. Relevant Hashtags Join the conversation and spread the word about sustainable fashion with these hashtags: #SecondHandSeptember #SustainableFashion #FashionRevolution #ShopSecondHand #ThriftedFashion ### A Vintage Velvet Legacy This September, as part of Secondhand September, I find myself reflecting on the treasures hidden in my wardrobe, particularly my mother’s vintage velvet dress. This stunning piece is not just a garment; it’s a story woven through generations. T...

Bicycle to school today

In the UK, the average distance of child travels to school Is 2.6 miles?. So it’s definitely feasible to walk or bike that distance. My school was 14 miles from home, And most felt this wasn’t feasible to take part in the walk to school or about school days, As it would require around five hours travel meaning a very early start. But a small group of my friends did one year take part in walking to school.

Jonathan

Every morning, my heart walks out of my front door and makes his way to the bus stop. I watch him till he reaches the end of the drive and disappears as round the corner. Then I track his progress on my phone. Make sure he leaves safely on the bus.. Every morning, my heart travels steadily away and, just short of his destination at School, stops.

Thinking about what I’ve been doing in the last six months while I’m off work I’ve achieved CEFR level A2 in French I earned a certification in trauma informed coaching I completed Code Institute’s 5 day coding challenge  I built a website I learned to create content with short videos and with stories to tell the story of the data I’ve have me termed an engineer for stage 2 chartership with ICHEME The trauma coaching course built on my qualification as a mental health first aider. I was a qualified and appointed mental health first aid in my last position at Tunley Before that, I was a mental health champion. I was trained as a mental health champion by furloughteers during the pandemic. So adding trauma coaching Seen a natural further step But I think it’s also driven by my training as a witness support volunteer at Manchester Crown Court. Here I was trained by victims support and the Greater Manchester police to support victims of crime giving their evidence in court. Thes...

Ev day

Charge your EV for free Today Monday 9th September is World EV day. If you’re finding the start of the week tough, it may be made a little bit better today As  RAW Charging in the U.K. are offering EV drivers to  charge for free from selected sites .   BP Pulse  are also offering discounted rates across its U.K. charging station network. There are similar promotions in other countries, too. I personally have not opted for an electric car. I do about 400 miles a year in my trusty, Economical and paid for Hatchback. It is now in its 11th year and I hope to keep it for 20. The carbon debt owing to embodied carbon from manufacture of a new car far outweighs the carbon benefit an electric car would offer me. Evs have, however, come along way. The first Nissan Leaf in 2010 had a real world range of only 60 miles (autotrader). As an engineer, my work required extensive travel to remote sites off the beaten track and inaccessible by any kind of public transport, Especially t...

Anemos

September 3 is world merchant navy day. The day marks the sinking of a merchant Navy cargo ship in World War II, the SS and FEMA, So while it marks the loss of a ship and commemorate lives lost in the merchant Navy, but it should really be as a celebration. Celebration I’ve men and women delivering a vital service. Food, clothes, essentials of life or all delivered by ship. Virtual water is a concept by which essential goods such as foods and clothing are transported from places of manufacture which have other abundance of water to places of need which have a scars of water. In that place that need food and clothes, but have a shortage of water can get the things they need without using their precious water resource. So the trade is an absolute lifesaver because you’re sanctuary providing these people with the water they need by them not needing to use it to make the goods that you transport to them they’re able to use that water drinking water for irrigating their crops so it’s f...

Becoming a mum while losing my mum

Mum had barely arrived and was already set to leave. Your grandmother arrived when you were 6 months old, on the same day as your dad chose to join us. You were 10 months old when they told mum she was going to die. And when you were 12 months old mum died.

Sf6

Hitachi Energy’s new switchgear substitutes SF6 with a gas mixture that contains mostly carbon dioxide and oxygen. It works as well as SF6 and is as safe and reliable but with a much lower  global warming potential , trapping 99% less energy in the atmosphere, Heimbach says.  Last week, Hitachi Energy  announced  it’s producing new equipment that replaces SF6 with other materials.  Despite their relatively small contributions so far, emissions of the gas are ticking up, and the  growth rate has been climbing every year.  SF6 emissions in China nearly  doubled between 2011 and 2021 ,  Sulfur hexafluoride (or SF6) is far from the most common gas that warms the planet, contributing around 1% of warming to date—carbon dioxide and methane are much more well-known and abundant. However, like many other fluorinated gases, SF6 is especially potent: It traps about  20,000 times more energy  than carbon dioxide does over the course of ...

Epigenetics

Epigenetics means above genetics. it describes the expression of genotypes in phenotypes. The important word here is expression and term Epigenetics please under attempt to explain those observations that cannot be explained through direct translation of genotype alone. Mendel the father of genetics Mendel’s Peas As once mandal could not explain codominsnce shared inheritance so only dominant and recessive genetic characteristics were accepted genetic inherence mechanisms. Smooth peas or wrinkly peas never part wrinkly peas .So red flowers or white flowers, not pink flowers. It is known that genetic expression is much more complicated than that.  Heresy More recently it used to be heresy to suggest that something that happened to you in your lifetime could be passed on in your genes to your children. And then there was the holocaust and the shocked mice. NURTURE not nature It had previously been accepted that there was no genetic inheritance of Characteristics acquired during the p...

Data lego

My son is building Lego. At first he opened the box with excitement and pulled out all of the numbered bags. He opened the booklet and started to follow the instructions. Then he opened more bags to find the pieces. Eventually, he opened all of the bags and emptied them into great Big muddle on the floor. Enter mum.  I gave him 20 Tupperware tubs. Between us we sorted by colour. Another option would be to sort by type. For some colours there was so much Lego we sorted by both type and colour. In other words, we had ourselves a data problem.  Here is your data in the beginning Big pile of mixed up bricks. At this date, you would not be able to tell what the Lego model is going to be. Here is your data after some data cleansing and sorting Bricks separated by colour In separate pots. He still cannot tell what it is going to be, but you have an idea of the size of the problem. This is visualised data Data by type and colour. You starting to see a pet merge you can visualise...
