Why I’m not afraid of AI

 AI hasn’t had my live experience.

AI was never a little girl going into hospital for an operation on her hands. I was two years old. My handwriting is very poor and I cannot draw. I Prefer to dictate the articles I write rather than typing them. Yet I am grateful to the School of the surgeons as I grew up to be an engineer. My work has been very manual.A I can never Have lived that experience. Despite my hand related disadvantage all of my studies up until my PhD were pre-computer. So everything was handwritten. There were some computers about when I went to university, but only the rich kids had a computer of their own. I Stood and queued in the library for my turn to use a university computer. The library was on campus, But my home was not. I walked for 2 miles to and from campus following my queueing and my use of the computers. There was a accommodation on campus, but it isn’t something I could afford. Writing this I’ve just realised the irony that the rich kids both had computers in their rooms so didn’t have to go to the library to use one and could afford accommodation near the library which they didn’t need to attend . AI Knows a lot, but it did not gain its degree walking in the cold studying in the library queueing for a computer.

Has never lost a bucket in the final effluent Lagoon, nor waded after it. It has not feared disfigurement when it’s pilot Research furnace Blew up, Rescued precious experiments during its PhD when the ceiling collapsed. It has not been treated for leptospirosis. It has never flooded the lab trialling GAC with raw water.

It is never overcoming anxiety to attend conferences meetings or interviews. It can never connect the pattern of knowledge with lived life experience. It doesn’t experience Pollution of water with sewage from the point of view of a wild swimmer , Or offshore Wind turbines from the point of view of an offshore sailor. They can’t have my experiences of research and study of delivering novel water treatment processes Supplying water to many thousands of homes, Or investment strategy for waste water, or Smart maintenance scheduling. It didn’t eat with the local community in Detroit, I didn’t form that necessary relationship. It never missed a three day weekend With its family without overtime pay or time in Lieu To compensate, It never overcame its fears to travel to New York for business. It could never combine experience working with wide variety of clients with 30 years of experience in industry Can never do any of this against the backdrop of love and triumph and a constant hope for the future that keeps me getting up in the morning.
