Chocolate

Recently this weekend, I tried to buy some chocolate. I was surprised of the price increase since I last tried to buy chocolate. I must’ve been living under a rock.  The Bitter Truth Behind Chocolate’s Rising Prices  “  ke. Imagine a situation in which the prices of an industrial chocolate and one of its finest and the world’s “#1 most sustainable” chocolate become comparable. Would you change your brand, your wholesalers, your recipes?” Last: The rising price of cocoa has significantly impacted chocolate prices, leading to a convergence between sustainably sourced chocolate and conventional chocolate. This shift, while challenging for consumers initially, presents an encouraging opportunity for the promotion of sustainable practices in the chocolate industry. Cocoa prices have been on an upward trajectory, driven by several factors, including climate change, which affects crop yields, and increased global demand for chocolate. As these prices climb, manufacturers are com...

Cover ied

Please find attached my CV I hope you will see from this that I am skilled in getting to grips with a new and complex environmental regulation And then robustly implementing it, Writing the procedures training the teams, And assuring its compliance. I’d very much like to be part of implementing the industrial emissions directive to waste water; Following a career That began in an industry and majored In wastewater engineering Successfully implementing these regulations Would be a satisfying challenge for me.
17 August 2018 BAT conclusions for waste treatment published following a European Union wide review of BAT implementing decision EU 2018/1147 of 10 August 2018" 2 of April 2019 EA confirmed EnglishWaSCs that their AD facilities needed to comply with IED 6 January 2011 ED entered into force 20 February 2013 IED transposed into UK law Sewage sludge anaerobic digestion ( AD ) facilities need to comply with industrial emissions directive IED 7 January 2014 IED deadline for existing installations to obtain an environmental permit. July 2014 EA deferred the need for WASC to submit permit applications for these facilities to allow for consideration of whether they were already covered under the UWWTR. Therefore, the implementation of this aspect of the IED has been delayed for over five years at the point of the EA confirmation to the WASCS on 2 April 2019 April 2021 to October 2022 WASCS must provide definitive lists of all facilities used to carry out biological treatment of sewage s...

Wangari Maathai in her 2004 Nobel Peace Prize lecture

"As I conclude I reflect on my childhood experience when I would visit a stream next to our home to fetch water for my mother. I would drink water straight from the stream. Playing among the arrowroot leaves I tried in vain to pick up the strands of frogs’ eggs, believing they were beads. But every time I put my little fingers under them they would break. Later, I saw thousands of tadpoles: black, energetic and wriggling through the clear water against the background of the brown earth. This is the world I inherited from my parents. Today, over 50 years later, the stream has dried up, women walk long distances for water, which is not always clean, and children will never know what they have lost. The challenge is to restore the home of the tadpoles and give back to our children a world of beauty and wonder."  - Wangari Maathai in her 2004 Nobel Peace Prize lecture. In 1977 Wangari Maathai started planting trees in Kenya to combat deforestation. Her Green Belt Movement gave ...

French language day

Today is French language day, more officially known as  The French call French Language Day " Journée de la langue française" or "International Francophonie Day,"  observed on March 20th, celebrating the French language and Francophone culture  Francophonie day. It is observed by the international organisation of La Francophonie to celebrate the French language and Franco phone culture . A celebration in commemoration of the near me convention where in 1970 French-speaking states signed up to a line their mutual interest. the Francophonie, an organization promoting French language and culture, are intrinsically linked to humanist values, promoting  peace, democracy, human rights, and cultural diversity. And then I can see how it’s relevant To so many of us. The Quaker culture I was raised in believes in peace, Community, Equality And stewardship. For me, the stewardship part is environmental stewardship, but it can also be cultural and social stewardship. The o...

The A team

Don't let this distract you from the fact that, in 1972 a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team.

A1 1936

Here’s a short, adventurous story about a 14-year-old girl in London in 1936, with the looming shadow of WWII subtly woven in. Word count will be approximately 300 words. Let’s begin: --- **A Whisper in the Air** The air smelled of coal smoke and damp cobblestones as Clara dashed through the crowded streets of London, her satchel thumping against her side. The city was alive with the hum of double-decker buses and the cries of paperboys shouting the day’s headlines: *“King Edward and Mrs. Simpson: Scandal!”* But Clara had no time for royal gossip. She had her own secrets to keep. It was 1936, and the world felt like it was holding its breath. Whispers of war drifted into Clara’s ears while she eavesdropped on her father’s conversations. He worked at the docks, loading crates stamped with strange foreign labels. The men talked in low voices about Germany, about a man named Hitler. Clara didn’t understand everything they said, but she knew enough to feel a twinge of fear. That morni...

Nerdy nitrogen

The term "nerdy nitrogen" captures the multifaceted nature of nitrogen in science, highlighting both its essential roles in biological systems and the complexities of its chemistry and environmental effects "Nerdy nitrogen" is an informal and humorous term that often refers to the complexities and intricacies of nitrogen compounds and their roles in various scientific fields, particularly in environmental science and chemistry. Here are some key points about nitrogen and its "nerdy" aspects: Working with a client on their nitrogen problem I realised that nitrogen plays a major role in my life. Not withstanding that it’s 80% of the atmosphere, I realise I just can’t get away from the stuff. As a Chief carbon reduction Engineer one of my Missions Was to raise awareness and understanding of the science behind global warming. Regularly, I talked about atmospheric composition, About the roles of carbon dioxide and nitrogen in the atmosphere. How carbon dioxide...

Ammonia

Image
Imagine a bustling society of tiny, determined beings—the autotrophic bacteria—living in a vibrant, unseen world. These microscopic citizens thrive in environments rich with ammonia, a substance that many consider waste, yet for them, it’s a treasure trove of energy. In this miniature realm, the autotrophic bacteria are akin to resourceful warriors, battling against the harsh conditions of their surroundings. They form intricate communities, each member armed with unique abilities to harness energy from ammonia. As they  oxidise this nitrogen-rich compound, they engage in a relentless struggle for survival, converting ammonia into energy through a sophisticated process akin to a bustling factory. Picture them as skilled artisans, meticulously crafting energy from the raw materials at their disposal. They employ intricate biochemical pathways, transforming ammonia into essential nutrients that sustain their lives. This transformation is not without its challenges; they must n...
