French language day

Today is French language day, more officially known as The French call French Language Day "Journée de la langue française" or "International Francophonie Day," observed on March 20th, celebrating the French language and Francophone culture Francophonie day. It is observed by the international organisation of La Francophonie to celebrate the French language and Franco phone culture . A celebration in commemoration of the near me convention where in 1970 French-speaking states signed up to a line their mutual interest.

the Francophonie, an organization promoting French language and culture, are intrinsically linked to humanist values, promoting peace, democracy, human rights, and cultural diversity.

And then I can see how it’s relevant To so many of us. The Quaker culture I was raised in believes in peace, Community, Equality And stewardship. For me, the stewardship part is environmental stewardship, but it can also be cultural and social stewardship. The other testimonies or values are Simplicity and truthfullness. I was also raised close to humanist values, indeed my grandfather’s Funeral Was a humanist service.

So today I’ve taken a break from learning Spanish (and the occasional bit of Welsh On account of a Welsh colleague ) And learnt a little bit more French.

I have a little way to go as I’m currently at A2 of CEF R. The common European framework of reference for languages.

I know, then I’m not very good at French, but I do believe in The importance of communication in building bridges Between cultures And people understanding one another and growing communities together.

### Celebrating French Language Day

Today marks French Language Day, or "Journée de la langue française," also known as International Francophonie Day. Observed on March 20th, this day celebrates the French language and the rich tapestry of Francophone culture. The significance of this date stems from the Niamey Convention of 1970, where French-speaking countries came together to align their mutual interests.

The Francophonie is deeply rooted in humanist values, championing peace, democracy, human rights, and cultural diversity. These principles resonate with the Quaker values in which I was raised: simplicity, peace, truthfulness, community, equality, and stewardship. For me, stewardship encompasses not only environmental responsibility but also cultural and social care. My upbringing was heavily influenced by humanist ideals, as evidenced by my grandfather’s humanist funeral service.

Today, I've taken a break from learning Spanish (and occasionally dabbling in Welsh, thanks to a Welsh colleague) to delve deeper into French. While I still have a way to go—currently at the A2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages—I find joy in this journey.

I firmly believe in the importance of communication as a means to bridge cultures, foster understanding, and cultivate thriving communities.

  • French Language as a Vector:

  • International Francophonie Day:
International Francophonie Day, observed on March 20th, celebrates the French language and Francophone culture, highlighting the humanist values promoted by the French language.
