This week

This week I went to a stw in Leicestershire. I walked the site and got to understand the processes and the condition of the assets. I’m interested in emerging phosphorus removal technology for the site. I investigated an algae based reactor, but the inflow is too large. You know my interesting the potential of Algae in environmental protection from my article a rising tide. It may have to be a more conventional phosphorus removal system, but I was still open to emerging tech technologies and fresh ideas. Having spent so long in carbon reduction as well as environmental protection I’m keen for a green sustainable nature based solution wherever possible. I finished the week with the works Christmas do. It’s an opportunity to get to know everybody in the team better as our work is hybrid and our projects are diverse, so only having been with the company for two months it’s brilliant to get together with all of my colleagues in one place in an informal social gathering allows more Soc...

Semantics

I am tired of people that use semantics just so as they can pass judgement on others. If someone wishes to follow a plant based diet and wear leather shoes, That is their choice to make and not yours to decided that if you follow a plant-based diet you will have to be fully vegan by the observers definition even though they’re going to contribute nothing to the accomplishment of that.

Accomplished

Yesterday was the works Christmas dinner. I’m still full this morning From my mushroom Wellington, and Christmas pudding. When my alarm went off this morning I have to say, I’m glad I Hadn’t also been drinking so I can get up for my first shift of the day - preparing my son for school. Watching him with pride as he went to catch his bus, Before returning My mind to my paid employment, I found myself reflecting on something a colleague had said over dinner. What is the world coming to when unmarried mothers are proud? Clutching metaphorical pearls. Here is my response  The world will be full of educated and Accomplished women who are Independent, Contributing to society, And raising children with deep principles and a strong work ethic. Sounds terrible, doesn’t it?
It was not good. But the alternative was far worse.

Smart Dublin

Smart Dublin: Engineering wellbeing into a city of the future By Dr Torill Bigg, Former Chief Engineer at Tunley Environmental and Founder of BiggSolutions Smart cities are often described in terms of data, devices, and digital dashboards - but to me, as a biochemist and chartered chemical engineer, a truly Smart city behaves more like a living organism. Its systems must work in harmony to sustain health, energy, and wellbeing - not just of the infrastructure, but of the people who live within it. Having spent three decades in the water and environmental sectors, I’ve learned that the best engineering isn’t just technical, it’s human. Whether designing resilient water systems, improving environmental protection, or mentoring colleagues, I’ve always believed that technology should enable thriving communities, not just efficient operations. Dublin, in many ways, captures that philosophy perfectly. A City with a Beating Heart Dublin has embraced the smart city ethos not as a gimmick...

Huntingdon

I’m deeply shaken by the terrible incident on the train between Peterborough and Huntingdon. It is a route close to my heart and community. My thoughts are with everyone affected, especially the victims and first responders. I am saddened that it took 26 hours - and eight minutes - to stop a man who took a knife to a 14-year-old, before going on to commit this atrocity. It is great to hear that the last remaining victim in hospital is recovering. I have no doubt that diverting the train to a station with such close proximity to both the police headquarters and the hospital contributed immensely to the efficacy of the medical help provided. I am immensely grateful to all The people that rushed to help - the rail staff, the driver, the signalman, the first responders and the paramedics as well as members of the public. The response from now must be led by justice, wisdom and in peace.
