In 1935, Chad Varah officiated at the funeral of a 13 year old girl. The girl mistook menstruation for venereal disease and died from suicide, She Felt she had no one she could share her thoughts and fears with.
He says, “I might have dedicated myself to suicide prevention then and there, providing a network of people you could ‘ask’ about anything, however embarrassing.
Samaritans was able to give people a space where they could potentially find objectivity and perhaps a way forward, through being listened to.
