Painting
Sometimes recognition arrives after the talent. Your job is not to wait for the world to authenticate you before you keep going.
On Thursday, figurative painter Gertrude Abercrombie's 1951 painting "Alderman Merriam's Shells" sold at Freeman's auction house in New York for a record $1.35 million, shattering its $200,000 high estimate.
For 75 years, Alderman Merriam's Shells had been out of public view. It was in the estate of the doctor to whom Abercrombie had given it in exchange for medical services.
the painting wasn't suddenly valuable because someone bid $1.35 million for it. It was already the same painting when it was sitting unnoticed in a dark hallway. The rediscovery, research and authentication didn't create its worth; they revealed it.
