Diary, March 2024 Tuesday, the 19th of March

This morning Jonathan has stomach pains and chest pains

He does not have a temperature

Checked his blood sugars, and they have been at 15 steady overnight

I spoke to Dr Puthi at the out of hours diabetes team

He recommended we measure his Ketones

It’s always a bit of a job measuring Jonathan’s blood ketones, but when we went to the GP they only were able to do a urine ketone which is of no use to us according to the diabetes team. So I was very pleased to find that I have been organised and responsible, and I found his keto measuring machine in the cupboard with the strips exactly so I could lay my hands on them when we need them in an emergency such as this.

After my conversation with Dr Puthi, and before starting the ketone testing which I know can take awhile I emailed the school to let them know that was keeping him home until we had tested his key and he gets his blood sugars down.

The batteries are flat and I need to find replacements. This meant removing them from the scales are used to measure his food in grams, so I can calculate the necessary carbs for his insulin at each meal..

Pricking his fingers and getting the meter to register a reading took some time and Jonathan got quite upset as he always does when measuring his ketones.

HIs ketones were 0.2.

Rang Dr Puthi back and Dr Puthi says that it’s probably not related to his diabetes.

As 8 o’clock had ticked around, I rang the local GP for an appointment, Or at least a triage for an appointment.

However, Jonathan said while, it was ringing that he just didn’t want to see a doctor.

He also didn’t want to go to school.

I said he didn’t have to go to school, but I would need to take him to a doctor.

So he has gone to school.  He refused breakfast and with his blood sugars high He perhaps doesn’t feel hungry as low Blood sugars are one of the triggers for hunger, but he has lots of snacks. I’ve made sure of in his lunch to take with him and lots of money on his dinner card to buy snacks if he needs to which I’ve put on his card.

I had to drive him because by then, of course he had missed the bus.

It’s an expensive job running a car, just so as I can take Jonathan very occasionally to School or a hospital. I do not otherwise use it. I use it for 500 miles a year. It is, however very necessary when it’s needed, it is needed. And it has to be reliable on those rare occasions.

So I have set my MOT which is the government required roadworthy test for my car for the 2nd of April and I’ve asked them to check in the battery is strong enough to hold a charge between uses as I only get to drive the car but once a month and to take my indicators work, although they worked fine on today’s journey.

When I got back from driving Jonathan to the school I then emailed the school again to let them know that I have driven through Jonathan to the School so that they know he’s not absent and he is in the building.

It is now 930. If I was still at work, I’d have missed the morning meeting. Jonathan’s Health does have to be my priority.

0942 I clear up the debris from ketone testing and order those batteries.

Jonathan’s dad was busy.
