The power of silence
Mahatma Gandhi and Rosa Parks It is deplorable when any section of society is refused a voice. I agree that our society requires women to find the strength to stand up and speak up. But commitment to equality also requires others to facilitate those that would otherwise not be heard. Quiet people have just as much to say as the outspoken. Create a space for them to speak. It is notable that those whose causes encompass peace, freedom, equality, truth, honesty and environmental stewardship are those most likely to protest in silence. Where ‘voiceless’ might otherwise equal ‘powerless’ there are those that have demonstrated that our voices are not our only communication tool. Mahatma Gandhi and Rosa Parks, the silent multi-faith peace walks in January, the annual red parade of Dead Women Walking, and the many Quaker silent vigils are just a few examples.
