The power of silence

Mahatma Gandhi and Rosa Parks It is deplorable when any section of society is refused a voice. I agree that our society requires women to find the strength to stand up and speak up. But commitment to equality also requires others to facilitate those that would otherwise not be heard. Quiet people have just as much to say as the outspoken. Create a space for them to speak.  It is notable that those whose causes encompass peace, freedom, equality, truth, honesty and environmental stewardship are those most likely to protest in silence.  Where ‘voiceless’ might otherwise equal ‘powerless’ there are those that have demonstrated that our voices are not our only communication tool. Mahatma Gandhi and Rosa Parks, the silent multi-faith peace walks in January, the annual red parade of Dead  Women Walking, and the many Quaker silent vigils are just a few examples.

Pyjamas

For 15 years, I’ve been a mum and for most of that a single mum. I’ve been active on all of the forums,. Local mums pages. Mumsnet netmums, I’mjoined breastfeeding groups and bumps to crawlers and stay and play. Not to mention baby swimming, baby yoga and baby massage. And I’ve heard everything that mums have to say. one of the things mums took down on other mums for is doing the school run in their pyjamas. I find this quite odd. If a woman is taking the trouble to put on both tops and bottoms in order to go and do the school run, I’d say she’s doing pretty well. Personally, when my mental health is in great decline, I put on a dress. It’s much easier, there’s only one item. Whenever you see me on the school run in pyjamas, you can breathe a sigh of relief. All is well. I happen to be an independent parent, working full time, thriving as a professional in my career, running my own household and raising my wonderful children. I Go to the breastfeeding group in a tightly scheduled lunch...

STAR CONFLICT

Situation Having completed a very thorough test of predictive maintenance for pumping stations. I had printed the analysis written the model tested it on historic data and then tested it alongside the current method so there was no disruption to what were currently doing but I was able to observe the results would’ve been out to small stations to stations and finally rolling out Pumping stations  Task That last I needed to complete the role this time to make business as usual it would be implemented and taken on. Those maintenance manages that have been involved tonight or on board where the conflict was was the remaining maintenance man is and naturally their concerns for defending the area saying that they just want to continue doing things as . The teams in particular don’t want to change the way that they currently do things they just want to continue doing what they always do. But the business needed proficiency.  Action First I engaged Senior  management. Then...

Star responses

INITIATIVE  To pumping station index. Completed five water recycling investment program which is the five year program of around £250 million for recycling treatment and sewers. Deliberately moved to the operational management centre so I could contribute to asset management once the program has been implemented. Here a balance of performance as it performance and risk. So working on quantify business risk to be carried relative to performance to be delivered. They’re being sonic of a spectrum whereby you can have amazing performance and lots of standby assets maintain Service to the hilt or regress replacement program so it delivers perfect performance and zero risk and some between there and run to fail is the spot whereby you have Service ability, but you’re not over spending on your assets you haven’t goldplated the cap solution and you’re not then go pacing the maintenance solution and one of the things I used was the business impact matrices which should be devised for ...

Pr24

Who’s excited for PR 24? I am! August 28 is fast approaching. At PR24, the water sector must deliver substantial change. The draft determinations  set out the biggest ever investment package to protect rivers and seas, build new reservoirs, reduce leaks and raise the bar on company performance. These draft determinations set the sector on the path towards long-term transformation, which will deliver better outcomes for customers and the environment. The biggest ever investment by the water industry £88 billion will be invested between 2025 and 2030. £22 billion investment in the top 4 A big chunk £10 billion is being invested in reducing harm from storm overflows. Second on the list at £6 billion is investment to combat nutrient pollution. The boosting of water supplies comes in a significant third place with a £4 billion investment. £2 billion is allocated for nature based solutions and increasing biodiversity on water company land Where is the rest of the money going you a...

Bad managers

A hare in a rowing boat with a team of people. The team of people are rowing in sync. The hare is rowing fast and furious and out of sync.  Two things I have found that manages to which disrupt their teams One micromanagement I think they’re helping, but really the holding things up To pushing for results now. This is too much and not enough speed. Let me give you an example. If you’re moving house and you have a van to move the contents of your house in. You can take one of two approaches. What a manager who is pushing for results now insists that you just put things in the van straight away just keep putting things in put it in put it in put it in and then drive drive drive drive really fast until you reach the new house and then you unpack drive drive drive drive really fast and stuff and throw stuff and throw stuff in And there’s empty house stuff downstairs putting it in the van and go go go go . Or you can go into the house you can take inventory of the contents of the house....

Innovation

Innovation is an activity of improvement and continuous improvement. It’s not always about shining new kit is offered about application of newfound knowledge or even old knowledge newly applied. Most recently The kit hasn’t changed so much as the application of data and digitalisation to monitor for maintenance and automation. Encompasses technology, chemicals, processes, methodology and future proofing. It’s not just about new technology can be about maintenance requirements resource both human and physical resources spare parts they can take into account sustainability need from spare parts of the use of recyclable materials or the creation of materials from the process that can be used somewhere else. Whether you innovate introducing new technology or new methodology depends on what it is that needs to be delivered whether that is a new process which requires kit or a new regulation which could be addressed through changing the process methodology or the chemistry. Innovating ...

LinkedIn post there were those that said it couldn’t be done

I haven’t always described myself as Dr. Bigg. Having come up through various technical and scientific roles which were all very hands-on and manual I didn’t want to be mistaken for an academic. It was important to me to carry the physical dirt, the calloused hands, The real life know-how of the worker I have always been. And Being a woman in a male dominated profession came With so much prejudice The last thing I wanted to do was pander to People who presumed I spent my days in an office. Becoming Dr Bigg was a Turning point in my life. I have always lived with imposter syndrome. At university as an undergraduate, I believed I must have got there by mistake. It was an accident. It was not until coming top of my year in mid-sessionals, 18 months in, that I believed I belonged. It took until the head of my university course was shaking my hand to believe I was good enough to go to university the first time. Before starting my degree I worked at a petrol station. Here I had the spac...

My father David Bigg’s behaviour was disgraceful. Read this at my funeral.

It’s important to remember. It’s important to remember how disgraceful my father David Bigg’s behaviour was. If it was not for the money that he stole from me. My father stole from me. If he had not stolen from me, I would not have been so poor. I went cold and hungry and afraid for three years. One of the reasons I couldn’t borrow any more money as a student to support myself and feed myself is because my father David Bigg lied. David Bigg Lied. He said that he that I lived with him. And because I lived with him, he got tax credit While I was living there and I was a student. My father changed the locks when I was 18. I was not living there. I could not live there. I had no access. Moreover, my sister was living there. And it was a two bedroom house. My sister was in one bedroom with her boyfriend. And my father was in the other bedroom. There was not a bedroom for me. And I had no key. Because I was deemed to be living with my dad, the amount of money I could obtain was reduced....

Money

So I’ve cancelled my charity payments monthly and reduced my data plan for my mobile phone. This sees me £12 a month. While I was reducing my data plan for my mobile phone, which I need because it’s also a medical app for my son, I saw that I could use credit before they take money off of my bankcard. So I’ve took that box there’s £23 of credit there. That should cover three months. I look for work in earnest every single day. I’m applying for 10 jobs a day and it’s depressing. I’ve turned away the egg custard tart had a whole £1.45 because we just don’t need them. The Sainsbury’s man was very nice. Even though that’s probably the weirdest conversation he will have all day. Jonathan’s absent father was sarcastic to Jonathan yesterday because Jonathan’s father doesn’t see much of Jonathan. I pointed out that it’s Jonathan’s dad’s choice not to live with us and he did live with us and he has always been invited. Then he would see Jonathan every opportunity because we live in the sa...
